ACADEMY SCHOOL GRADING SYLLABUS

SHIELD OF ENDEAVOUR

The Academy grading syllabus is a nationally recognised programme designed to use Olympic sport of fencing as a tool to develop the individual to be the best person they can be on and off the Fencing Piste developing the whole athlete mindset. The Shield of Endeavour is the Academy’s way of
supporting children develop the skills essential to the wider world. We believe every aspect of our session can
be applied to life.

Gradings take place at the end of each term and based upon a clear syllabus that focuses on 3 key areas: Fencing actions, Physcial literacy and Life skills. The full syllabus is detailed below.

There are three stages to our learning journey:
Grade 1-3 INFORM
coach provides the key information
Grade 4-6 UNDERSTAND
Fencer uses the actions in set exercises
Grade 7-9 IMPLEMENT
Independent learning observed

GRADE ONE

Through this grade you will be informed about:

1. How to use your sword safely
2. How to Fence safely
3. The Fencing environment
4. En guard, stepping, lunging
5. Academy Values

GRADE TWO

Through this grade you will be informed about:

1. How to referee a fight
2. What Fencing equipment includes
3. How to deliver a captains speech
4. How timing and distance influence your movement

GRADE THREE

GRADE SIX

Through this grade you will understand about:

  1. Fencers will need to compete outside of the school environment or win the Hertfordshire School Championships

  2. ​Fencers will need to encompass actions from Grades 1-3 in set scenarios

GRADE SEVEN

Through this grade you will implement the following:

  1. Fencers will need to have medalled at a national series competition (Sabre Super League) 

  2. Fencers will need to encompass actions from Grades 3-5 in unscripted competitive situations

GRADE EIGHT

Through this grade you will implement the following:

  1. Competed internationally for the Academy

  2. ​Fencers will be fully aware of fundamentals and the importance of consistent self discipline in rehearsing fundamentals

  3. Fencers will have a tactical understanding of the game

  4. Fencers will be emotionally mature to handle changing situations

  5. Fencers will be very coachable and have the ability to take on and utilise guidance from Academy coaches

GRADE NINE

Through this grade you will implement the following:

  1. Fencers will be medalling internationally either for the National squad or the Academy

  2. Fencers can analyse fights through video review and live at competitions

  3. Fencers have an IADP and worked with the Academy Pathway Manager

  4. Fencers have clear goals that are linked to the Academy 2 Phase Season
